• Assessment of the Martinique epidemiosurveillance system, February 2008

Martinique’s epidemiosurveillance network has been assessed by a group of 5 epidemiologists members of the CaribVET Epigroup during a 3 days mission. The objective was to identify the strengths and the weaknesses of the system and to think about potential improvement of the network. The SNAT, a specific questionnaire for the assessment of national networks, has been adapted to the caribbean context by the CaribVET Epigroup in December and utilized for the first time in Martinique.
The main actors of animal health in Martinique were met through visits of farms, abattoir, veterinary diagnostic laboratory, and during meetings with veterinarians and representatives of the GDS (farmers association for animal health protection).
This visit was an opportunity to work on local and regional problematics, in particular the Tropical Bont Tick subject.

• Control programme of classical swine-fever in Hispaniola: Objective eradication

The bilateral commission Haiti - Dominican Republic for classical swine-fever control met on February 22, 2008 in Jimani (border post between the two countries). This meeting followed a year 2007 particularly active in the field of technical collaboration between the veterinary services of the two countries with 5 meetings held throughout the year, what had not been seen since many years.
The results of the meeting made it possible to show that the common surveillance protocol implemented on the two sides of the border fully met the expectations of the countries. This protocol will thus be continued according to same technical procedure in 2008 and will be extended to vaster zones of the two countries.
The posted objective is now clearly to go together towards the eradication of the disease in the island of Hispaniola.
