Suriname conducted Foot and Mouth Disease field simulation exercise, 25-26 October, 2017.

On 25 and 26 October of 2017 Suriname had a simulation exercise on foot and mouth disease (FMD) in a cattle farm in the region of Weg naar Zee, in the district of Wanica.

This exercise aimed to test the latest version of Suriname’s contingency plan in the field by simulating an FMD outbreak with field veterinarians, livestock professionals and field technicians. Close partners in disease emergency preparedness, such as Public health professionals and a member of the Private sector, were invited as observers.

This simulation entailed a theoretical – and a field exercise part.

The first part focused on:

  • Familiarizing the participants with the diseases, diagnostic procedures, protocols and biosecurity measures during a major disease outbreak.
  • Awareness of legislation in place concerning a major animal disease outbreak

The exercise in the field had the purpose of testing the latest version of the FMD contingency plan procedures and the first response in the field.

Financial assistance and expertise were provided by the Pan American Foot and Mouth Disease Centre, PANAFTOSA.
