Caribgreen: Caribbean Collaborative Platform For Global Health In Agroenvironment For Caribbean Development
Project start date:
01/04/2022Project end date:
30/04/2024Objectives
This project will promote and integrate agro-ecological practices in the region through better collaboration between existing regional networks in health and agroecology. This improved collaboration will be supported by an informative and collaborative platform.
The establishment of this operational collaborative platform will serve as an incubator for cross-cutting projects that will contribute to a common "One Health" regional strategy and vision, which may attract new funding, while improving the health of the territories.

Description
The region is characterized by the major economic and social importance of the agricultural sector. Caribbean territories rich in biodiversity have sometimes been severely impacted by the massive use of pesticides, some of which, such as chlordécone, are long-lasting and have contaminated the soil permanently.
There is, therefore, a major challenge and opportunities for the development of the agricultural sector based on overall environmental health, to be restored and preserved. Agroecological agricultural production with limited inputs also contributes to the transition towards more virtuous food systems.
The sectoral approach to different health aspects (environmental, plant, animal, human) is now inappropriate. The operationalization of new interdisciplinary and multisectoral "One Health" approaches remains a challenge that the CaribGREEN project aims to address at the Caribbean level.
Description
CaribGREEN relies on two major networks in animal and plant health for the Caribbean, bringing together more than thirty island and continental countries and territories. The project aims to structure and demonstrate the concept of a collaborative Caribbean platform in agro-environment and health.
The project also brings together key partners in agroecological transition sectors. This strong regional partnership, built over several decades, brings together Caribbean partners in research, innovation, and training in agricultural, environmental, and health sciences, along with the main institutions of the Caribbean.
The pooling of their expertise enables the implementation of collaborative, interdisciplinary, and multisectoral approaches to identify innovative solutions to the challenges of agricultural sector development. Among the funded activities, the integration of agro-environmental components within agricultural systems will be favored, as well as the optimization of interventions in animal, human, and plant health through emergency preparedness, strengthening of an early warning system, and disease surveillance.
