Each year since 1996, the second Friday in October is internationally recognized as "World Egg Day!". This year, on October 13th, 2017, the Belize Poultry Association decided to once again celebrate the World Egg Day by promoting egg consumption (presently at 175 per capita in Belize) and encouraging people to have eggs for breakfast. Four generous and educational activities around eggs benefits, production and consumption were organized in collaboration with Caribbean Chicken, Country Foods and Western Dairies.

CaribVET member of Regional Agriculture Emergency Response sub-committee

The 71st Special meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development of CARICOM (COTED) on Agriculture approved the Regional Emergency Response Sub-Committee to provide prompt action to help the agriculture sector in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Member States to rebound after natural disasters. CaribVET is one of the organisations represented in this sub-committee.

Guidance for Pet Evacuations to the United States due to Hurricane Irma

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is providing the following guidance to all individuals who are evacuating pets from areas impacted by Hurricane Irma and wish to enter the continental United States or territories. This guidance is for the Hurricane Irma-affected areas only, all other animal imports must conform to current federal, state, and local regulations.

In light of the current circumstances, due to the devastating effects of Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria on the British Overseas Territories (BOTs), namely the British Virgin Islands, the Turks and Caicos Islands and Anguilla, the Cayman Islands Government acknowledges the difficulties faced by persons wishing to relocate temporarily with their children and pets. As the Ministry with oversight of Education, Youth, and Agriculture, two proposals to provide temporary provisions to alleviate these difficulties were presented and approved by Cabinet.

On-going Veterinary Relief Initiatives in the Caribbean

A great number of initiatives are ongoing in the region to provide emergency relief to animals and their owners in countries most heavily impacted by the recent hurricanes. Those initiatives, in coordination with local governments and stakeholders, are varied and involve professionals and stakeholders from the public and the private sector as well as associations, NGOs etc. throughout the region and internationally. In this article, we provide an overview of initiatives that involves CaribVET, directly or indirectly. Others are also reported (“More information”)

Maria followed a similar track to Irma, hitting small island developing states which were already battered by Irma. It is exceptionally rare to have two category 5 hurricanes in such a short space of time and on a similar track. Maria hit more particularly Dominica, Guadeloupe, Anguilla, the US and the British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and part of the Dominican Republic. Other countries / territories in the Northern Caribbean could feel the effects of Maria with heavy rains and strong winds in Saint Martin, Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius, Antigua and Barbuda and Saint Kitts and Nevis who were this time less affected than with IRMA.

Hurricane Irma, "the most powerful ever observed on the Lesser Antilles" and a record-breaking tropical cyclone for the atlantic devastated the islands of Barbuda, Saint-Martin, Saint-Barthélémy, Sint Maarten, Anguilla, the British and the US Virgin Islands, South of the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands, Cuba and Florida State (USA). Eventually, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Haiti suffered less damages however some are very important and localized. Hurricane Jose threatened over the week-end again the North of the Leeward Antilles, as a Cat IV hurricane, without much damages fortunately.

Little attention was given to the disaster that affected the Bristish Virgin Islands on August 7th, after a tropical wave unleashed torrential rains in the North Caribbean.
